Magento will stop supporting Magento 1 in 2020

There have been some big changes over at Magento HQ, most notably the recent acquisition of the platform at the end of May by Adobe for an eye-watering $1.68 Billion. Yet, whilst that has caused a stir amongst agencies and retailers alike, the latest announcement is set to cause even larger ripples across the ecommerce marketplace.

It’s the end of the line for Magento 1.

Made official on 6th September, Joe Ayyoub, Director of Support Operations at Magento, announced that they will stop support for Magento 1 merchants at the end of June 2020. Support for the platforms will continue until then to ensure merchants have the time and confidence to upgrade.

For Magento Commerce 1 (formerly Enterprise Edition), depending on your version, software support may include both quality fixes and security patches. Magento Software Lifecycle Policy.

For Magento Open Source 1 (formerly Community Edition), security patches will be provided to ensure sites remain secure and compliant. Review Magento’s Legal Terms to see which versions of Magento Open Source 1 continue to receive software security maintenance.

It’s also worth noting that whilst Magento has committed to 2 years of support, third-party extension providers are not held to the same terms. We have seen several extension houses stop selling Magento 1 extensions altogether and so it’s well worth doing the research to identify a timeline for your site.

What next…

The announcement comes almost 3 years after Magento 2 was launched in November 2015 and, whilst we all knew it was coming, for many merchants using Magento Commerce 1 the announcement will be a bitter pill to swallow.

However, while we understand there is a level of upheaval required when re-platforming, it doesn’t have to be a negative experience. Partnered with a supportive and certified agency, you’ll be able to make the switch with minimal disruption to your day-to-day operations. The new features and enhanced scalability of Magento 2 also make it the perfect choice for those looking to take their businesses to the next level. Magento’s unmatched flexibility enables the global community of partners & developers to deliver virtually any commerce experience in record time & at a superior total cost of ownership.
